5 Minutes from the Farm . . .

There are a few local treasures to be had within a few minutes drive of the farm.  Most of these attractions don't have a website, but are definitely worth visiting.

The closest beach park to the farm is Honoli'i, the most popular surf spot on the East side of the Island and a local favorite.  Honoli'i is a rivermouth and a great spot to learn to surf; you'll see surfers of all skill levels there. There's convenient parking, bathrooms, showers, picnic tables, and lots of nice grassy spots to lay out in the sun.  Also, watch out for turtles - they love this beach and are abundant here!  To get to Honoli'i just follow the highway towards Hilo and take a left down Nahala street (across the Highway from Alae Cemetary), then another left on Kahoa street.

Astounding 'Akaka Falls State Park is just up the road from the farm, clearly marked off the highway.  Bring your mosquito spray and $5 cash to give to the guard for parking, then enjoy the walk!  A paved half-mile footpath leads you through lush rainforest to a stunning view of the 442-foot waterfall.  There is also Kahuna falls on the hike, and a bathroom at the parking lot - go before the walk so you can enjoy your time!  And stop by the cute little shops in the town of Honomu on your way back down the hill.

Low Store is a local hot spot, family-owned and operated since 1925!   They offer many convenient basic items along with smoothies, ice cream, sandwiches, coffee, wraps, and more.  We love the smoothies and highly recommend the Island Nachos!  They always have fresh local fruits on display outside available for sale.  They are closest to the farm (2 miles) and are open daily from 6:00 a.m. to 6:00 p.m.

What's Shakin Smoothies is an adorable, tourist-oriented snack and gift shop past Low Store on the scenic Onomea Bay drive.  Here you will find an assortment of tasteful Hawaii-themed gifts and souvenirs to contemplate buying over lunch.  What's Shakin is situated right on a farming property and uses many freshly grown ingredients in their delicious smoothies and yummy menu items.  They're open daily from 10:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m.

Continue down the tiny windy Onomea Bay drive (Old Mamalahoa Highway) and you'll come across the Hawaii Tropical Botanical Gardens nestled into the jungle.  Go prepared with mosquito spray and enjoy the lush tropical vegetation for a comfortable one mile walk.  The gardens are open daily from 9:00 a.m. - 5:00 p.m., with admission ending at 4:00 p.m.  They also have a gift shop and florist.  Please refer to their website for admission prices and any other details.
